Denim on top... and bottom?

So denim on top is definitely a hot trend right now, in the form of jackets, shirts, vests, corsets, you name it! But one look I'm not so sure I love is a denim jacket or top paired with jeans on the bottom. Here, we see Reese Witherspoon (I believe) wearing this double-denim look. I don't know if I think it looks too cowboy-ish, or too plain, but something about this outfit just doesn't seem right to me. If you can work this look or have a picture of someone who did, please prove me wrong! Or if you have tips on how to wear this without looking silly, please let me know in the comments section :)
